Solidworks - Scan Data (Mesh) Limitations
Standard SOLIDWORKS BREP Bodies (Solid or Surface Body import without Mesh Body options):
Each facet converts to a standard BREP face.
Maximum: 500,000 facets (250,000 vertices) per mesh file for import as Solid/Surface Body. Exceeding this is not supported and typically fails or forces alternative import.
Performance degrades significantly with high facet counts due to the large number of resulting faces.
Mesh BREP Bodies (with "Create mesh bodies bounded by single faces" enabled):
Treats the mesh as a collection of facets forming BREP-like structures.
Warning threshold: >5,000,000 facets (2,500,000 vertices) (for both Mesh BREP and Graphics Bodies). This is a warning only; higher counts may succeed on high-end hardware (more RAM, faster processors) but can cause slowdowns or instability.
Graphics Bodies:
No strict hard limit on facets/vertices; imports faster as pure graphical data.
Suitable for very large scans (multi-million facets). You can later decimate or convert portions to Mesh BREP.
Earlier versions (e.g., around 2014) had tighter constraints: ~20,000 faces for solid bodies and ~100,000 for surface bodies (Parasolid knitting limits). These have been relaxed in modern releases.
In SolidWorks, facets are defined as the triangular polygons (or faces) that form the surface of a mesh body or imported scan data.
Mesh BREP Bodies: When you import or reference mesh/scan data (e.g., STL, OBJ, or 3D scan files), SolidWorks treats it as a Mesh BREP (Boundary Representation) body. These bodies are composed entirely of triangular facets. Each facet consists of:

A triangular face.
Graphics Bodies vs. Mesh Bodies: Imported scan data often starts as a graphics body (faceted representation used for visualization). You can convert it to a full mesh body for editing, where the facets become editable elements.

High-resolution 3D scan data has traditionally required extensive manual surfacing to convert into clean, editable solid-body models.
